A quirky cat temple on a street lined with lawyers. Amsterdam Cat Museum

F

or cat lovers, there are several stops in Amsterdam. A catboat that houses up to a dozen cats you wait in line (early in the morning) to get the chance to play with. A few cat cafes, and finally De Kattenkabinet – The Cat Cabinet.

It’s a smallish museum on Herengracht in an old canal house, and it’s devoted exclusively to cats. It was established by a wealthy Dutchman in 1990 and specializes in artwork representing cats.

1. Things to see

There are a lot of items in the catalog including some beautiful vintage posters and advertisements, along with some humorous fine art pieces, serious sculptures.

The cat museum takes up the lower two levels while the owner still resides at the top of the building. 5 cats live in the building and there are a nice gift shop and an even nicer backyard garden.
