One day is enough, if you hurry. Bratislava, Slovakia
ot every destination works out, that’s okay. Sometimes trips are long and your energy gets low. Bratislava was the low point for our 13 country trip. It was towards the end, and my travel partner was just fatigued from the onslaught of all the new things, new people, new places and relentless sightseeing.
Part of the adventure of travel is newness, but after a while you can begin to feel disconnected from everything, and cities start to blur together after being on the road 3 months, moving every three or four days.
1. Things to see
We arrived in Bratislava, to stay in a great hotel outside of the center of town, with a fantastic restaurant, then took a walk – saw a fountain, some parks, and generally faded glory. The next morning we got up and went out for more sightseeing. About an hour into it decided we had enough, Bratislava is small – but not small enough to walk.
We made a deal with a taxi driver for 100 euro to be our guide for the day. It seems like a lot, but for the whole day, and the ability to visit all many of the sites on our list in a place neither of us would ever likely to visit again in this lifetime, it seemed like a great value
Our driver was super kind and took us to the Blue Church – the church was closed but we were lucky enough to get a quick look between the bars on the gate inside. Also, a graveyard, Bratislava Castle, and then out to Devin Castle where he waited for a few hours while we made the trek up to the castle to look over the ruins and river, then make our way back down. We ended the day at the UFO which is a tourist trap and waste of 14 euro to reach the top and look over a mostly drab city. Avoid this tourist trap if possible.
Downtown the main tourist draw was a bronze statue of a man’s head peeking out of a bronze manhole cover (the Sewer Worker). Hrm… Then we had some ice cream and walked around a tree-lined park and left.
The Bratislava Castle was probably the most scenic site and provided some good shots of me sitting high up on a wall, but otherwise, Bratislava was not a very memorable place. We ended up leaving a day early, anxious to get someplace with more going on.
