Kyoto, Japan – A black and white pictorial
f you shoot in black and white you have to be a little brave (or foolish). Most professionals recommend shooting in color, then post-process to B&W. But for me – when you walk out the door knowing you’ll only be shooting B&W you start to see the city differently – you’re looking for high contrasts, deep blacks, the way the light hits the subject and sort of simplifying the elements of your pictures. I’m not a professional photographer (at all). I just enjoy wandering the streets and taking some snaps.
Kyoto is one of the most visually stunning cities on earth, certainly unique with it’s tiled roofs and weathered wood structures. It feels like you’ve stepped back in time 100 years. It’s difficult not to take decent pictures when walking around Gion. However, it’s also introverted, from the architecture which often focuses on internal gardens or open spaces to the introverted nature of Geisha culture. It can prove challenging to get past the beautiful exterior of Kyoto and photograph something authentic.
